Cultural Identity
and Diplomacy of EU

The aim of the course is to inform students about the possibilities of cultural strategy and to search for answers to questions: Which are the respective actors and the relevant topics? To what extent is the reconciling role of culture reflected? To what extent can culture be used as an instrument for peace education and international understanding? To what extent can culture sensitize to differences and universal perceptions? Discussed topics: the status and role of culture in international relationships, the importance of the cultural development of the European Union and abroad, the EU as a unique cultural and political entity in international relations. Cultural Production Development

The aim of the course is to connect the explorations of different cultural industries and with cultural development broadly defined in the context of European economy. The course outlines is based on the nature of culture and cultural development, models of cultural development and cultural development programs. socio-economic and socio-cultural implications of cultural development. The course presents the nature of the infrastructure which supports cultural industries in Slovakia, Poland, Germany and Switzerland. One of two course lecturers is from Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica, and one is from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. The aim of the course is to develop communicative competence of mutual cooperation institutions at the European and national, regional, and local level; to present the concept of intercultural communication, types of culture. Barriers to intercultural communication: stereotypes, prejudices, cultural expectations, perceptions and attitudes, culture shock and its phases. In the next steps: to consolidate an awareness of one’s own culture and values, adjusting critical attitudes, comparison of values of different nations, ethnic groups, and language communities. Role of verbal and non-verbal communication in intercultural relations. Mentality, thinking, and behavior of representatives of different nations and their impact on personal and working relations. Psychology of intercultural relations. Understanding and solving critical incidents in organizations through cultural dimensions. National identity and respect for differences between individual cultures and subcultures. Two course lecturers are from Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia.
